why The Yeomen of the Guard is my favourite Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. I've always thought it had a more 'classical' feel to it than most of the others. Now I know why.
I took part (4th from right, front row) in a school production of Yeomen and believed the ending to be tragic (and Elsie to be heartless).
I always wanted to be one of the Yeomen (they get all the best harmonies) but, by the time I was old enough to take part, the school was drafting in boys from the local boys' grammar school to play the male parts.
