The winter solstice has been marked by the lighting of fires and candles throughout the longest night, for generations. While some communities concentrate on the traditional Yule fire, and Druids gather at nearby Avebury to welcome the morning sun, one Wiltshire village has revived the practice of lighting the white horse on the hillside.
At Alton Barnes, famous for its crop circles, a small group of people approach the farmer for permission to cross his land and place jars
with candles in all around the horse's outline.
