'The Season' has well and truly begun.

Saturday's boat race was a close run rowed event.

Oxford, on the favoured Surrey side, made a strong start and looked set to make it three wins in a row. But the Dark Blues failed to make the most of the sweeping middle bend which turned in their favour, and Cambridge stayed in contention and made their decisive move after Chiswick Steps.

The crews clashed blades briefly as the race entered the Hammersmith bend.  Cambridge kept pace, ensuring Oxford could not extend their lead beyond a quarter of a length and, at Corney Reach, where the river turns back towards the Middlesex bend, Cambridge edged ahead and then pulled clear to win the 156th boat-race by more than a length.

Next Saturday, it's Grand National Day.
