Heart of Gold as knitting - improbability drive effect

I watched the 2005 film version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on BBC i-player Sunday evening.

Having listened to the radio play, watched the TV series, and read the novels, I found it difficult to find the 'original story'. In fact, the story has evolved through its different incarnations, almost as if each version is taking place in an alternative universe. It was enjoyable but lacked the main ingredient of its other incarnations - the American cast, no doubt, had trouble delivering British wit and whimsy.

"With the dubious aid of the Guide, a galactic President with short-term memory loss (in both his heads) and a depressed robot, Arthur (Dent) embarks on an improbable journey through the universe in search of the meaning of life and a really good cup of tea.
