The World's End

comes to Letchworth Garden City

MWNN and I were driving through Letchworth on Tuesday when we spotted signs of a film crew with its attendant support trucks along the Broadway.

Two 'cherry pickers' trained spotlights on the upper windows of the Broadway Hotel and traffic was diverted away from the car parks in the centre of town.

What was this? we wondered.

Thanks to the magic of the Interweb, I discovered that there was a new film from the 'Shaun of the Dead' stable being filmed in the town. The World's End refers to one of the pubs through which the central characters are 'crawling'.

Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Nick Frost

Not only is the town playing host to Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, but Doctor Watson (Martin Freeman) himself was spotted visiting the film set earlier in the month.

When Letchworth Garden City was in its planning stage, the people of the ancient town of Hitchin, which was proud at that date to be known as 'Sleepy Hollow,' looked upon the inhabitants of the new garden city with amazement, and scoffed at the idea of a neighbouring town being started that should become three times its size.

The World's End of the film's title is  one of the pubs through which the central characters are 'crawling'. Several pubs in Letchworth GC were renamed for the film set. I wonder if there will be another remake of 'Sleepy Hollow' in its smaller neighbour, Hitchin?
